Things I Wish I Learned Sooner: The Psychology Of Procrastination And How To Cope With It
1. The Fear Of The Perfectionist.
Procrastination is the unconscious fear of failure.
If you put off a task long enough, you don’t have to deal with the possible negative consequences.
You shouldn’t get hung up on doing little things “just right” because that delays continuing the task.
How to tackle it:
- Try to think of completing your task in a positive way.
- Understand that perfection is a myth.
- Do your best and realize that this is all you can do.
2. Inability Of The Dreamer To Act.
A person who is very creative and has many brilliant ideas, but cannot put them into action.
This happens because you don’t set goals after the idea is created.
The aimless approach leads to a lack of decision-making and delays.
How to go about it:
- Once you have an idea, write down a timeline of what you want to accomplish and by when.
- Do this daily to keep yourself on track and accountable.
3. Overwhelm Avoider.
A task can be overwhelming, causing you to procrastinate.
The complexity of a task causes the brain to lose motivation and avoid the task altogether.
How to tackle it:
- Break the challenge into smaller tasks and tackle them one at a time.
4. Busy Bee Who Lacks Priorities.
You have too many tasks and neglect the different importance of each task.
You waste time switching from one task to another or spending too much time deciding what to do.
Even when multitasking, things get jumbled.
How to tackle it:
- It’s all about priorities. Prioritize important tasks over urgent ones.
- Make sure you question the value and purpose of each task and make a list in order of importance.
5. The Distraction Addict.
Distraction is another reason for procrastination.
Our brains are not designed to concentrate for long periods of time, and they look for something else.
How to combat it:
- Pay attention to your workspace and possible distractions.
- Work for 20–30 minutes at a time and then take a 5-minute break.
